Market Overton Rinks Gala Sunday 14th July 2019
An overnight rain meant the green was refreshed and looking lush and in great condition for bowling on Sunday July 19th ready for the Market Overton Bowls Club Annual Rinks Gala. We were delighted to see bowlers and guests from as far away as Rugby, Earl Shilton and Market Bosworth.
With twelve teams competing all six rinks were occupied. Free tea and coffee on arrival and then at 10 am 8 ends played before returning to the club house for the refreshments on offer or the bar before another 8 ends played.. Everyone sat down to a super lunch at 12.30 and in the afternoon the same format with tea and cake to sustain the players.
The 'nearest to the edge of the rink' Spider resulted in a 'play off' between Jeannie Hutton [The Invincibles from Marko] and Sue Starbuck [Ermines from Stamford] with Sue winning the luxurious bottle of rum.
A plentiful raffle table groaning with mainly bottles was quickly dispersed at the end of the afternoon.
The Booby prize winners for the third year running I think even though this year under a different name were The Insiders from Marko with a score of 12. The scoring is a point for each end won, 4 for a win and 2 a draw, Jo Abbot, Brian Abbott, Dave Edwards and Mike Parkes standing in place of a bowler on the sick list, won the mini wines.
Runners up were Zippys Crew from Earl Shilton scoring 32 points, losing on their first end to the ultimate winners 8 to 12, but then winning the other three games 9 to 8, 19 to 2, 7 to 2. An all lady team led by Kath Fudger, with Sally-Ann Lewis Wall, Cynthia Stock and Helen Lewis-Wall .
The ultimate winners were a Marko team called 'Billy No Mates', as the name suggests a late entry because neither couple knew the other wanted partners! Didn't they do well? This mixed team won all their games! 12 to 8, 10 to 2, 8 to 4, 10 to 7. The team were Ellen and Gordon Corby, Jack Warner and Liz Dyer.
An excellent day enjoyed by all and with so much fun and banter to be heard across all the rinks. Congratulations to all involved.
