Market Overton Bowls Club

Gala 15th July 2018

Market Overton Bowls Club was founded in 1945 and I think the originators of this old club would have been proud of the event held on Sunday 15th July. This was the first of two Galas held this year.

20 teams entered a Rink [i.e. 4 bowlers]  from far and wide and were treated to a great day on a fantastic green, of which we are very proud, super club house, bar , refreshments, meals, facilities all second to none. Most of all friendship and good hospitality.

Mal Croson is President this year, not for the first time and he welcomed one and all.

The weather was at its very best and competition was keen. Three games of 8 ends and one of ten covering the lunch break as this requires two sittings for the 80 players and guests.

Winners this year were ' home grown' from MARKO going under the name of 'Confused.com', consisting of Richard Lambert, Jeannie Hutton, Colleen Laker and Dave Laker.  The team won all their four games with scores of  11:4, 8:2, 15:3, 7:5 accumulating 41 points.

Runners up were 'Mamarage' from Syston, players were Marilyn Wood, Ray Wood, Martin Warner, George Stone. They also won all their games 16:3, 11:5, 8:6, 8:4 and totalled 38 points.

The Gala was sponsored by Mal Croson and the winners received £25 per bowler and the runners up £15 each. £160 prize money in all.

Another club member led the Booby prize team this was 'The Blades' with Jo Abbott, Dave Edwards, Mary Slater, Brian Abbott. winning one of their four games and managing 15 points. Each receiving a mini bottle of wine.

There was a 'spider' this time for a cash prize, one by Helga from Stamford and the 'Brick in the Wall' competition that has been running a week or two and finalised on Sunday meant £50 to one of our semi retired bowlers , who only comes to the occasional roll up, Dorothy Ellison from Market Overton.

The meal and refreshments were enjoyed  by one and all but most of all the company of each other. Thanks to everyone who made it all happen.

The Triples Gala will be in September,  entries are being accepted now.

The next busy event apart from the league games and friendly fixtures is the Presidents Day on 12th August, and the evening before Saturday 11th August we are once again welcoming the Melstrum Ukuele band  raising funds, this year for Age UK. Tickets are £6 each. Its a good foot tapping evening.  Tickets from the Secretary 01572 812233
