TRIPLES GALA SEPT 1ST
MARKET OVERTON BOWLS CLUB TRIPLES GALA AND BOOR & WAINWRIGHT FINAL HOST
A busy weekend for the Marko club with the Boor & Wainwright Final, run by the Stamford League Outdoor club held at the neutral venue for the second time on Saturday afternoon 31st August and Marko’s second Gala of the year, this time Triples, Sunday 1st September.
The competitors in the Final were from Blackstones and Wittering with Blackstones taking away the shield presented to them by President elect Annette Oliver who coincidentally is Secretary of Marko. Both teams had supporters and after the game enjoyed refreshments in the club house.
Sunday another fine start, 14 teams ready to play, some home grown and some from afar. Once again we were blessed with the weather, a cool breeze out of the sun but apart from a slight sprinkling in the afternoon for a few minutes, all was well.
We take a much more relaxed attitude these days with regard to timings; the plan was four games each team of 8 ends. Two games before and two after lunch. The bar is open all day and a generous supply of tea, coffee and cake always on tap to keep any hunger pains away. We are proud of Marko hospitality.
The green was in super order having been lovingly prepared by the green keeping team on the Saturday morning, with the surrounding pretty garden and plenty of seating it is a nice spot to bowl or spectate.
The first 8 teams rolled the jacks at 9.10 a.m. Howzaat [Melton], Triple Secs [Barwell], Oddsnends, The Insiders, Sams the Man, Marko Marauders, Confused.com, Wing & Co all from Marko. Soon after ten am it was the turn of The Stonewoods [Syston], Bosworth Belles [Earl Shilton], Chippy Saints [Chipping Norton], Bad Lads Army [Syston], and Marko teams Not Sure and The Over 80’s club. The names are drawn out so its pure chance who plays who.
Some teams got off to a slower start than others. A point is awarded for each end won, four points for winning the game, two if drawn. There were some close run games. During the morning the timing slipped back a little so it was agreed that after lunch we would play 7 ends only to prevent us finishing too much later.
Much fun with the Spider held after lunch, 46 bowlers aiming to get their wood nearest to the edge of the green. Kevin Bull who is not a bowler but was from behind the bar using a borrowed wood and finished second to the owner of the woods Eddie Owen for the bottle of whiskey.
Final Gala scores were Not Sure 28, Wing & Co 27, Sams The Man 27, Howzaat 23, Confused.com 21, Marko Maurauders 20, Bad Lads Army 16, Bosworth Belles 16, Oddsends 15, The Insiders 11.
Overall Winners with £25 prize money each were Triple Sec for the second year running with 37 points, Lorraine Hibbins, Jeanette Smith, and Ken Hibbins. Maralyn Wood's team from Syston, The Stonewoods, were runners up for the second or third time receiving £15 each with 34 points closely followed by Chippy Saints with 33. The booby in the shape of mini bottles of wine were the Over 80s club, Ann Cusdin, Mary Slater and Mike Parkes [who strictly speaking does not fit the title]but Mike was deputising for Les Cusdin who was unwell recently but able to spectate.
