Below is a report on last years President Day as a taster of things to come!
PRESIDENTS DAY MARKET OVERTON BOWLS CLUB 13th August 2017
Well what a weekend MARKO has had! We started with a return visit from Melstrum Ukuele band who entertained us on Saturday evening 12th August. There was a lot of joining in, foot tapping, and hilarity in the audience to the mixed bag of music and singing presented by this happy group of enthusiasts, from Old Mother Brown to the Beatles songs! Not only do these musicians entertain but they do it with gusto and raise funds for charities; this year it was ‘Home Start’ supporting families. Over 50 people in the main hall of the club house had a really good night and all went home with a smile.
Sunday dawned bright and sunny and Presidents Day began. Syd Forbes is holding this office for the 5th time, albeit not consecutively, but he first became President in 1984. Bar Manager and some say back bone of this old bowls club everyone rallied round to make this another fun occasion with a difference.
There were sufficient bowlers to form 3 x 4 rinks and 3 x triples. Visiting us for the occasion were old friends from the bowling world, Adie Lloyd, Match Secretary of Friends of English Bowling, and past President of Bowls England 2014 together with his lovely wife Kath, Treasurer of the Friends. Also Marcia Dunstone, Secretary of the Friends and President of Bowls England 2015 and her husband Colin. The two couples were currently staying over at Leamington Spa where the National competitions are taking place throughout the month. Two others visiting were Vera and Ken Laker from Digby BC ,brother and wife of one of our bowler members.
Before the game began a spider was held. A slightly different pattern to usual. Each bowler had to send one bowl and try to reach as near to the far ditch as possible without dropping in. Winner with a fancy red bowl was Marcia who was soon tucking a bottle of whiskey into her bag to take back to base! Nightcap planned then Colin!!
8 ends were played and then the teams moved onto another rink against another team, as you would in a gala. This means everyone spent time with more than just a few people throughout the afternoon.
The green bowled beautifully thanks to the hard work of the greenkeepers. Marko spent a lot of pennies on the green last winter and from the complements received this summer it has been well worthwhile.
There was a lot of hilarity but intensive bowling and good close scores. We just called it a draw in the end. After all it did not really matter?
Once the bowling was done it was on to the BBQ. Member Mike Parkes kindly lent the equipment, the Secretary did the shopping, then it was over to the men to do the cooking!! And it worked. We never knew such talent existed.
This is what sport,- bowls in particular is about, good healthy exercise in the fresh air in good company. Any age from school to pensioner. We all want to win but we all love bowls more.
The Club competitions are in their semi finals stages and we look forward to the finals weekend 26th and 27th August. We also have another Gala to look forward to at the club, a Triples this time taking place on 3rd September. All teams are booked in and looking forward to the competition.
Anyone interested in coming along to see what MARKO is all about is very welcome.
